Acupuncture | Chelation Therapy
What is Chelation Therapy?
Chelation therapy is the intravenous use of EDTA (ethylene
diamine tetra-acetic acid) to treat the toxic heavy metal
accumulation in the body. The accumulation of toxic heavy
metals can lead to many health problems: heart disease,
cancer, premature aging and arthritis.
EDTA is administered along with other vitamins, minerals
and other substances. The EDTA binds (chelates) to the toxic
metals found in the body and the EDTA, along with the harmful
metals is then excreted through the kidneys. Blood vessels
and organs are cleansed which in turn helps the body improve
the circulation and metabolic functions. Within 24 hours,
almost all of the EDTA is cleared from the body.
How
is EDTA given?
EDTA can only be administered by a board certified naturopathic
physician or medical doctor. The doctor will take a detailed
history, perform a physical exam and conduct necessary diagnostic
tests before giving chelation therapy. EDTA therapy may
be given as often as every other day (the maximum frequency)
and each treatment lasts about three hours. Patients can
recline in a comfortable chair and pass the time reading,
sleeping or conversing.
Depending on the patient's problem, 20 or more treatments
are usually recommended. Throughout the treatment, the patient's
creatinine is tested for kidney function and urine is monitored
for heavy metal. Once the entire treatment plan is followed
through, monthly booster treatments may be recommended for
maintaining the health benefits.
Does Chelation Have Side Effects?
When administered and monitored properly by a trained doctor,
side effects are rare. Possible reactions: headache, inflammation
at the site of the IV, dizziness, or nausea.
